Experience and Awards

John has over 25 years of pertinent experience in North and South America, Australia, Africa and Europe working in mining and geotechnical engineering. Dr. Hadjigeorgiou is a past recipient of the John Franklin Award in Rock Mechanics from the Canadian Geotechnical Society and the Rock Mechanics Award from the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Research and Professional Activities

John's teaching, research and consulting activities are in the areas of rock characterization, slope stability, tunnelling, reinforcement and support, and mine design. He has advised the major mining companies on the management of mining risk and its impact on operations.

Research

Ground Support

Current research, in collaborations with mines in Canada and Australia, focuses on the behaviour of rock reinforcement and quantifying their performance under extreme conditions of large deformations, mining induced seismicity and in corrosive environments. 

Rock Mass Characterization

Since the early 1990's have been working on the development and implementation of Discrete Fracture Networks (DFN) in rock engineering applications. This has included applications in underground mining and tunneling as well as slope engineering and landslides in North America and Europe.

Behaviour of Veined Rock Masses

Current work focuses on the characterization of veined rock masses and understanding their behaviour under load. This involves identifying their distinct AE signature. This project further develops the Synthetic Rock Mass approach to fully capture the observed behaviour of veined rock masses. This research has significant implications in caving mines. 

Surface Mining

Current research focuses on geotechnical pit design and managing risk in open pit mines in the Canadian Arctic and in South Africa.  

Ore Pass Systems

Recognized as the leading mining authority on ore pass systems. My contribution has been multi-faceted: a comprehensive database of ore pass and chute performance in over 25 mines in Canada, USA and Africa has identified best practices and documented ore pass failures. Investigation of material flow in ore passes using theoretical, laboratory and numerical experiments using 3D Stress Analysis, the Particle Flow Code and Synthetic Rock Mass models. Developed design guidelines and practical recommendations to prolong the longevity of ore pass systems used worldwide. Results have been disseminated by presentations and workshops at over 30 mine sites, and through Keynote/Invited presentations at the major mining forums.
